I was watching a "mommy show"...Revenge...and there was a part where someone fell off a building onto a car. Gavin was playing and he saw it and said "this is a bad part, I want to watch a good part." He was really scared. He understands so much more than I give him credit for sometimes.

He is working hard on potty training. He's had a few days with no accidents and today even made it through a trip to the park and his nap. Night training has not been attempted. He is so sweet with his little brother. He can make him laugh on command and is always worried if Holden is crying..."mommy go help him!"

Holden:
Age: 8 mos
Teeth: 5. Three in the last week, and three more on the way.
Size: 12 month clothes for the last 2 months
He's got a pretty quick army crawl down. He just started pulling himself up to a standing position. He's at a stage where he can't do everything he wants to do so he is getting a little frustrated. He eats all of his pureed fruits and vegetables pretty well, although he won't eat any of the baby cereals. He usually communicates with happy high pitched screechings and dadadadas. With the exceptions of the last week, he is the happiest baby. If only he would let us sleep a little more...

Holden's Blessing

On March 20, we were able to have Holden's blessing with most of Rachel's brothers here. We missed Papa Dan and CC, as well as a lot of our siblings. Rachel missed out on most of the blessing trying to manage Gavin as he attempted to play swords with the men in the circle. She's sure it was a great blessing though and we are so blessed to have this sweet boy in our lives. He has one of the best temperaments and the best cheeks.

Holden Ryall Brown

That's right, he has a name. Sorry for the delay. Holden is a name we just happen to like and Ryall is the name of my (Rachel) Irish ancestors. Thanks to Jordan for doing my family history. I will recap the night Holden decided to join us. Gavin woke up from his nap at about 4pm. We let him open his birthday presents (a toolbox, a few cars from Cars, and Mack and a shake and go Lightning McQueen). He was loving his presents. Jordan ran to the store to get a few things to make the salad dressing to go with our Cafe Rio Pork imitation. I'm playing with Gavin and feel some pretty bad stomach pains so I decide to go to the bathroom. I stand up and cough and my water breaks. So I call Jordan and tell him to hurry; he's already on his way. Liz, our neighbor and best friend ever, is playing outside with her kids so I open the door and tell her my water broke. She comes in and helps get Gavin's things together while Jordan and I are getting my things together...that's right I hadn't even started packing. That's what Tuesday was for. Well the contractions are pretty hard and pretty close. Liz takes Gavin, feeds him dinner, does his birthday cake, puts him to bed, and stays with him until Jordan gets home around midnight. Meanwhile, Jordan and I arrive at the hospital, I'm getting "water" all over the floor (sorry janitor), and we head up to the second floor. We get checked in, get in my room, and the contractions start to really hurt. At this point they are a minute and a half apart. They page my doctor and he is in surgery, so they give me a shot to slow down the contractions. Doesn't work. They won't give me any pain medicine because they are waiting to get into the OR. I'm pretty desperate at this point. With a scheduled C-section, natural pain management strategies were not learned. After an hour and fifteen minutes and dilated to a 4, they wheel me into the OR where I see Dr King - not my doctor. I thought he was assisting, but turns out Dr Dozier was still in surgery. Turns out that surgery lasted 2.5 hours longer than expected. Glad we moved on. I was in so much pain I didn't care anymore. Finally the epidural came and it was heaven. A couple of minutes later, Holden was out and they started working on me. After I was all sewn up, they wheeled me to recovery, where I waited for about an hour and a half. This was new. It was 4 hours before I finally got to hold Holden. One of my bigger complaints about the experience. With Gavin, I had him within an hour, even with a C-section. Second biggest complaint: no access to a sink for the majority of my hospital stay. We now have Holden safely at home where he weighed in at 10 lb 4 oz today (2 weeks). He was 9 lb 7 oz at his 1 week checkup. Here are a few pics to go along with all of this text. And by a few, I mean a lot.

From Utah, we drove up to Wyoming to meet Aunt Carolyn. Gavin's favorite part of the drive were the cows. Getting through these definitely added a chunk to the drive.

In early September, Jordan and Gavin spent their first Daddy Son time alone. They left a few days before me to go to Utah to see Uncle Tanner while he was there. They had so much fun fishing with Tanner, Charee, and Coco.

About a month ago, we drove out to Long Beach with some friends to go to the aquarium. Not the best aquarium I've ever been to, but pretty good for the little guys. This was the first tank as you walk in. This pretty much sums up Gavin's experience.

5 years, 19.5 weeks, 2nd haircut, & more

Friday, Jordan and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary. I know everyone says it, but it's hard to believe that it has been five years since that ridiculously hot/humid day in DC. Trust me, if you were there, you remember the heat. Jordan and I took turns wiping sweat off of each other in between pictures. Sounds romantic huh? We decided to stick with our pretty classic celebration. I was sick during the night, the night before, so Jordan stayed home from school to let me sleep in. Then he went out to pick something up and surprised me with these gorgeous flowers.

We had never been to an Imax, so we decided to go see Inception at the Imax. It was really good, but I think I'll save the extra money next time. One thing it did not lack was loud surround sound. I would never bring a kid. In the middle of the movie, the picture stopped working, while the sound continued. They had it back up and running in about ten minutes, but we were compensated with some free passes (with restrictions). After the movie, we headed over to Macaroni Grill. Jordan took me there for our first dinner date. We haven't been there in a long time and it was really good. I forgot to have our server take a picture, so this is what we got of ourselves at home.

Upon arriving home, (our next door neighbor, Liz watched Gavin) we saw this.

That's right, she did our dishes, which I happen to know she really dislikes doing. She also brought over her bin of maternity clothes for me to look through (she is ridiculous right? i owe her big). Have I mentioned I'm pregnant? Well the two of you who read our blog already knew that. Here I am at 19.5 weeks.

And no post would be complete without Gavin; in fact, this is probably the least about Gavin of any post. Tonight we (Jordan) decided it was time to give Gavin another hair cut. Ok he has been telling me to for weeks and I finally agreed. His hair was kind of a mess. Looks like we forgot to get an after picture. Maybe tomorrow (that means I'll post in two months).

Also, some just for fun. He took all the stickers off of his nursery project and put them on his forehead.

He loves Bongo and Cookie Monster.

And we can't forget our visit from CC which seemed to last 10 minutes. We are so glad she made it out here and grateful for everything she gave us. Gavin likes to sit on his new potty, but hasn't discovered the real purpose yet - he just thinks he gets to sit down naked, which he likes. We're not pushing anything, just want him to start getting used to the idea. Wouldn't it be nice if he were potty trained before the new baby came? And gave up the binky? Wishful thinking, I think.

Growing Up

Gavin is growing up so fast. he is trying so hard to talk and he says a few words including cheese, fish, and cookie (for Cookie Monster). He's really good at cheering when we watch Deal or No Deal. If you ask him a question, he will usually respond with a very adamant "Ya-Ya". He's been saying no for a long time, but the last couple of days he has developed a very concerned sounding "no". He loves stacking things, even if they aren't meant to be stacked and has become obsessed with Rice Krispies. He usually asks me to give him some 5 times a day.

We are getting ready to move next weekend to family student housing. They're not the biggest or nicest, but along with other pros, they are about half the rent. Our apartment is a huge mess and we have several boxes filled. Also for all you netflix subscribers, go watch Veronica Mars. It's on watch instantly now. Or you can just go buy the seasons, it's totally worth it. I haven't given up on a movie yet, or better yet, just bring the show back, I mean seriously have you seen some of the shows on tv these days?

Frustrations, Golf Balls, and Mommy's Shoes

Lately Gavin is challenging himself with balancing feats. For instance, the other day he had a spatula and a golf ball. He had the spatula on the floor and kept trying to balance the ball on it. He was getting really frustrated and crying. Eventually he got it balanced so he was happy again. But that wasn't good enough...then he picked the spatula up and off fell the ball. So he starts crying again and he had to start over. He doesn't give up, but he ends up sitting there crying. I try to help him, but it's even hard for me to balance the ball on the spatula. Eventually I gave up and distracted him with something else. Similar balancing acts have been attempted daily. It's so interesting to me that he gets so frustrated that he sits there crying. Maybe he's going to be really good at the egg on spoon balancing at parties.

In other news, Gavin has no problem balancing the golf balls in his mouth.

After we went walking the other day, he made me put my shoes on him.

"New" Aunt Carolyn

Jordan and I starting doing our family history a few months ago. Since a lot has been done on his side, we have mostly focused on my side of the family. Jordan has taken over my mom's side and I have been working on my dad's side. We signed up for Ancestry.com, talked my parents and grandparents (on my mom's side). My dad's mom was unfortunate enough to not raise him after he was about 2 years old. My dad also found an old letter from one of his aunts that told him he had a half-sister a couple of years older than him and her name was Carolyn. My main focus became to find out what happened to my dad's mom and half-sister as there was a slight possibility his mom might still be alive, and good possibility his sister was alive. Using the little information we had, I was able to find a possible birth record, and two marriage records for Aunt Carolyn. The first marriage was in Los Angeles, not too far from us here in Riverside. As ancestry.com provides indexes, but not certificates, we decided to drive over and have a look at the records to find out more details. We found the certificate for her first marriage and from that, found out her first husband's parents' names. I was able to find them living in Hemet (30 min from us) and found a phone number for them online. They were so nice and gave Aunt Carolyn my number. The next day I got to talk to my Aunt Carolyn for the first time. She is so nice and sweet and excited to be part of our family. Unfortunately my dad is still in Canada picking up Josh from his mission and hasn't been able to talk to her yet. I'm so excited that after nearly 60 years, my dad will get to know his sister. I think she was shocked to learn that she has 6 nephews and 3 nieces. We have all been overwhelming her with information.

I definitely can. We also have two new cousins, Diane and Karen. Diane lives in Chino, so we'll get to meet her soon. We're so glad to know that families are forever and we'll get to meet Karen someday. We're going to have to plan a trip to Wyoming to meet Aunt Carolyn. We can't wait! We love you Aunt Carolyn! Welcome to the family.

After my first attempt with Jordan's hair, I decided I had better do some more research before our next attempt.

Marine Corps Blanket Tent

Does your kid's blanket talk about appropriate use in a combat area? Thanks to my dad, Gavin has his very own Marine Corps blanket. When I was three, I was cold and stole the blanket my dad was using. From then on I always had that blanket. It's pretty old now, but I still sleep with it some nights. My dad carried on the tradition and sent Gavin his own embroidered blanket for his birthday. Here are a few shots from his first Marine Corps blanket tent.

As we all know, I'm not very consistent on my blogging. I'm here today to update everyone on everything from Halloween to Gavin's first birthday. I can't believe my little boy is already a year old. He loves doing everything with mom unless it's eating vegetables. You can ask Jordan...Gavin is a mama's boy. He started walking right at 10 months and his hair is starting to look like a mullet, which means we need to cut it finally. Jordan's sister, Kendal was so nice to take some great pictures of Gavin while we were all in Arizona in October. Gavin had so much fun with his cousin, Stone. Here are some of my favorites from the shoot.

Here are some pictures from Halloween. For our first party, Jordan was a Guitar Hero, but then for the ward party, he was Edward Scissorhands. I think it turned out pretty great. Gavin was the cutest little monkey and I was some sort of purple sorceress.

I gained a few pounds over the holidays, so I was forced to compensate by chopping my hair off.

On the subject of Christmas, we all received some great gifts. Gavin got a new car seat, lots of books, and some really fun toys. Jordan got new head phones, some yet to be bought running shoes, a book, a jacket, and a shirt. I got some clothes, of course, and Jordan completely surprised me with this gorgeous necklace. I told him we needed to take it back, but I love it too much so I never got around to it. Guess I have to keep it now.

We had a great time on our two trips to AZ and our two weeks in San Diego for Christmas, but there is always something nice about being home. Jordan just started his second quarter at UCR and Gavin and I play, go to the park, and learn how to eat like a big boy.

Life Update

So a lot has happened since our last post. We made it safely to Riverside California and are enjoying our new TWO bedroom apartment. Gavin almost sleeps through the night in his very own room, but I don't take full advantage of it, staying up too late to watch Lost (we are on season 3). Since moving to Riverside, we have met several very friendly people at church. We went to an Angel's game a couple of weeks ago with them (sadly I just noticed that my Braves will not be in the playoffs. At least it wasn't an embarrassing season this year). Gavin crawls around all day getting into everything. It makes it quite hard to be productive. I can't be on the computer when he is around because he cries until I let him "type" (he is sleeping right now). He monkey walks along everything, but hasn't felt the need to try to stand or walk on his own. He has eight teeth now and is working on eating regular foods, but that is coming along very slowly. Although he does love his yogurt melts. We realized the other day that he has grown out of all of his toys, so I quickly got on Amazon and a few new age appropriate ones should be arriving tomorrow. We are trying to decide what to have Gavin be for Halloween. A few of the costume ideas I like so far are Pooh Bear, Yoda, A pumpkin, and a monkey. Feel free to let me know what you think he should be.

Jordan goes to school everyday and works hard to provide for us. We are so happy he is our husband/dadda. Gavin is yelling about just how happy he is for dadda right now.

Gavin Update

Gavin continues to grow so fast. We can't believe how big he is getting. At his 6 month appointment, he was 21 pounds and 27 inches. I guess he is going to be a short pudge. He is on the verge of crawling and loves getting into things. We have to watch him a lot closer now. Some of his new tricks are eating rice cereal and fake coughing. Sorry some of the video clips are long, I'm just too lazy to edit them.

A lot has happened since the last post. First, the little boy has grown. It may not seem like it, but he's fat. So, here are pictures of what's happened these past few months.

My dad bought Gavin this outfit. He's a little big for it, as noted by his tummy sticking out.

Compare this picture below with the one from the previous post. Less than two weeks passed between the photos. He fit snugly this time.

As for the pictures below, we went to Seattle for Rachel's brother's wedding. These are photos from the trip.

Gavin doesn't fall asleep for us like this anymore.

Rachel is a very good field hockier. Once summer rolls around she brings out her stick.

And finally, my old friend from El Paso, Austyn, who now lives in New York made her way back to Provo. Her and her husband had dinner at our place. They brought their boy along, Brody. The two are eight days apart.

January 3rd was a big day for Rachel. Actually, Jan 2 and 3 were big days. It started Friday at 12:30 in the afternoon when Rach had a Non-Stress Test appointment. We went to Utah Valley Hospital and Rachel was hooked up to a monitor to see how our baby was doing with contractions. It turned out his heart rate would go down after a contraction, and we wanted the opposite. They asked if we wanted to deliver there, and we were like "No Way!" so the nurse sent us directly to Orem Community Hospital. She was put on another monitor in a huge delivery/recovery room, and we were getting excited. Our baby would do alright with some contractions and bad with others, so the monitoring continued for hours (at least we were able to see the Sugar Bowl, go Utes). Around 4:00 AM Saturday morning Rachel started having painful, painful back labor. The people finally decided to give her an epidural and around 4:30 it started to kick in and Rachel finally was able to fully relax. She went from a 1 to a 4 in a matter of minutes, and the nurses decided to give her Pitocin to give bigger contractions. Well, right when Rachel started to fall asleep the nurse came in and said the baby's heart rate was getting worse with the bigger contractions and she called the doctor in to consult. It was determined a C-section was the best option. She was prepped for it, and at 6:45 AM our little man came out of her stomach! Rachel is getting better with pain meds and rest. She's up and walking a little now, and our little boy is the greatest. He weighed 9 lbs and was 20.5 inches long. He gets cuter by the minute. It took us a few days, but we finally named him Gavin Jordan Brown. It was almost Gavin Hayden, but then I explained to Rachel about both those names, wink, wink.
